Psychometric Testing

by Declan 14. Febuary 2011

Psychometric testing is a relatively recent development in the recruitment industry, and for that reason, many firms do not appreciate the results it can provide. However, what they may not realise is that these tests are very helpful on multiple levels. Once people know how important this test can be, they will start to see why it is given so often at different levels.

One of the major benefits is that this test helps in the people assessment phase that many companies carry out. This gives the company a better indication of the type of person they are dealing with, whether they are trust worthy, will they need constant monitoring, will they get on with others etc. It can also help lawyers judge the creditability of a witness or client to be telling the truth about the case they have. This is being increasingly used in the United States in particular.

According to recent research carried out, close on 70% of medium sized companies upwards are using some form of psychometric testing. The number of for the small-medium sized category is far smaller. Many do not understand it, and many of those that do feel it is not worth the investment. With the level of competition increasing, the costs involved are quite reasonable. What these businesses fail to recognise is that the cost of this testing is a fraction of the cost of a wrong hire.

Psychometric testing has been proven to work better than interviews alone. This is particularly useful for as this means there is less emphasis on the skill of the interviewer, who may not be a recruitment specialist. The reporting suite offered by psychometric testers is generally jargon free. The practical information allows an individuals strengths and development can be seen at a glance.
